What if the secret to sharper thinking was as simple as following a recipe?
The U.S. POINTER trial just gave us the proof. In this two-year, nationwide study, we tested whether a blend of healthy lifestyle “ingredients” could protect brain function in older adults at risk for cognitive decline. As a co-investigator for the study, I had the privilege to co-lead the lifestyle interventions and oversee their delivery at all five study sites—building on the pioneering work of Dr. Martha Clare Morris, the lead creator of the MIND diet.
The results: Everyone improved, but participants in the structured program—think a chef’s precise recipe, not just a list of ingredients—gained even more cognitive benefits than those following a self-guided approach.
The Brain Health Recipe
From the U.S. POINTER test kitchen to yours:
Physical Exercise — 30–35 min of moderate-to-intense aerobic activity 4x/week, plus strength & flexibility 2x/week
MIND Diet Eating Pattern — leafy greens, berries, nuts, extra-virgin olive oil, fish, whole grains, and limited added sugars and saturated fats
Cognitive & Social Exercise — Challenge your brain with new learning 3x/week for 30 min, plus regular social connection and stimulating conversations.
Regular Health Monitoring—Track your blood pressure, weight, labs, and take charge to partner with your doctor about your heart and brain health.
